Abstract

Placemaking is commonly associated with revitalisation, participation, cultural identity and more active public spaces, yet interventions undertaken in its name can also erode the very relationships they seek to strengthen. This chapter distinguishes between making places and breaking them by treating place as more than physical space. Places already contain memory, attachment, conflict, livelihood and social meaning before professional intervention begins. Regeneration may improve streets and buildings while simultaneously commodifying culture, increasing rents, displacing established users or turning living heritage into a controlled visual product. The chapter therefore frames placemaking as an ethical and political process as much as a design exercise. Community knowledge derived from everyday use is treated as expertise, while Malaysian practices such as gotong-royong, informal stewardship, religious networks and local associations demonstrate that collective place care predates the professional terminology of placemaking. Change itself is not rejected, but it should deepen rather than sever relationships. The distinction ultimately depends on power, participation and care: successful placemaking strengthens memory, diversity and long-term belonging; place breaking privileges image, branding and economic value while progressively separating people from places they once recognised as their own.
